Banaras Wood Craft is an Exclusive GI of Uttar Pradesh: Banaras Wood Carving is one of the finest examples of traditional handicrafts. The carving on wood is done by the skilled artisans of Varanasi, using a traditional set of tools. The wood carving industry is more than 400 years old. Smaller blocks of carved wood take up to a week to be made, whereas bigger logs might take up to a few months. Banaras Wood Carving is classified into categories like - religious, cultural, animals & birds, traditional and modern. Miniature sculptures of deities intricately carved out of wood are also made using traditional techniques. The life of each block of carved wood is about 75-100 years. Banaras Wood Carving is an Exclusive GI of Uttar Pradesh and was awarded a GI certification in 2021.
