The warp and the weft of a Sambalpuri sari are tie-dyed before weaving, making it a traditional handwoven bandha (ikat) sari known locally as "sambalpuri bandha" sadhi or saree. The Indian state of Odisha produces it in the districts of Sambalpur, Balangir, Bargarh, Boudh, and Sonepur. In the Indian subcontinent, the sari is a traditional feminine garment worn in a variety of ways across the body. It is made up of an unstitched strip of fabric that can be four to nine meters in length.

Traditional designs like shankha (conch), chakra (wheel), and phula (flower), all of which have profound symbolic meaning in the local Odia culture, are a hallmark of Sambalpuri saris. The facial colors of Lord Kaalia (Jagannatha) are represented by the colors red, black, and white.

The most notable aspect of these saris is the intricate weaves, sometimes called Sambalpuri "Ikkat," which showcase the traditional skill of the "Bandhakala," or tie-dye art. This method involves first dying the threads using a tie-dye and then weaving them into a cloth, a procedure that takes several weeks to complete. Sambalpuri sarees was awarded GI tag in the year 2012.
