Kinhal toys are traditionally handcrafted and handpainted. The art of making Kinhal toys is practiced in the village of Kinhal in the Bagalkot district of Karnataka, India. These toys are primarily made from locally available softwood called "Aale mara" or the Indian Cork tree.
The making of Kinhal toys is a meticulous process that requires skilled craftsmanship. The toys are first shaped on a lathe, then coated with layers of lacquer, which not only adds color but also provides a protective finish. Finally, the toys are polished to a smooth, glossy surface.
Kinnal, a sleepy village in Koppal taluk, is home to the eponymous craft that was awarded a Geographical Indication tag in 2012.
