Molela Clay Work Art Panihari Sculpture
The Molela Terracotta Clay craft hails from the arid lands of the Molela village in Rajasthan. A mixture of clay, donkey dung, geru and lacquer is used to make appealing yet functional products. A variety of products such as terracotta kitchenware, figures of deities, jewellery, etc are made by shaping clay with hands.
Molela Clay Craft is an Exclusive GI of Rajasthan: The meticulous craft of molela clay sculpting has been a part of over 15 generations of the household of the Molela village. The beauty and uniqueness of the craft lie in the fact that it does not involve the use of a potter’s wheel. The sculpting of the products is done by hands only. The products made of Terracotta Molela Clay Craft are relatively light as compared to other clay products as they are hollow from within. The hand moulded products are baked on the wood fire and thereafter colours are applied to the products followed by a layer of varnish. A wide range of products such as pots, jewellery, earthenware, sculptures of deities, etc is made by experienced artisans with the skills passed from generation to generation like a legacy. Molela Clay Craft is an Exclusive GI of Rajasthan and was awarded a GI certification in 2008.
