The Telia Rumal, meant for the Middle-Eastern market, was worn primarily around the neck for its 'tel' (oil), to keep dryness at bay. In Arab countries, the women used to wear these Telia Rumals as head scarves also. This fabric gave them a cool feel during blazing summers, and in winters, it kept them warm.
These rumals were patronised by Nizams of Hyderabad, who commissioned elaborate pieces. It also resulted into creation of sarees for Indian women where the yarns were treated with the oil.
Gajam Govardhana popularized the tradition and revived the art of telia rumal which was then dying. Tooday his contributions to revival of Telia Rumal has brought this sustainable, natural process of art to an international level.
Telia Rumal for its strong linkage with Putapakka village of Nalgonda district of Andhra Pradesh received GI certification in the year 2020.
