Painted on handmade cloth scrolls prepared with natural gums and pigments, Pingla’s Pattachitra depicts stories from the Ramayana, Mahabharata, local folklore, and social themes, brought alive through bold lines, flat yet luminous colours, and rhythmic visual sequencing. Traditionally, Pingla’s artists travelled from village to village performing pat khelano, gradually unfurling their scrolls while singing patua gaan, earning their livelihood through this deeply immersive art of visual narration. Though modern challenges once threatened its survival, the artists of Pingla have resiliently adapted—continuing to use natural dyes, hand-crafted brushes, and age-old techniques while also engaging with contemporary themes and new formats—ensuring that Pattachitra remains not just a painting, but a powerful expression of heritage, memory, and community storytelling that connects past traditions with present realities.
