Channapatna Toys and Dolls is an Exclusive GI of Karnataka: Channapatna Toys and Dolls industry set its base in the Channapatna region of Karnataka in the early 20th century. It was initially a household industry where every family member in each house was involved in making toys. As the demand for the toys increased, the industry grew and can now be categorised as a small scale industry. “Hale” wood is handcrafted into attractive dolls and toys. The wood is soft and lightweight, thus, can be moulded into different shapes and sizes. Once shaped, the dolls and toys are coloured by melting lac sticks available in different colours making the products suitable for kids. After being coloured, the glossy finish is given to each product using palm leaves. Since all the materials used in making Channapatna toys and dolls are natural resources and the craft involves traditional and sustainable techniques, the final products are eco-friendly. Channapatna Toys and Dolls is an Exclusive GI of Uttar Pradesh and was awarded a GI certification in 2006.
